20 Years of Sony PlayStation

sony_playstation20years

In Japan on December 3, 1994 Sony entered the console war with the Sony Playstation (or PS1 or PSX). North America and Europe got there look at the console in September of 1995 while it competed against the Sega Saturn and the Nintendo 64.

The Sony Playstation did so well that it became the first video game console to sell 100 million units and it did this in a 9 year and 6 month time span after launch. The system itself was in production until 2004.

The games were so popular that Sony continued to manufacture PS1 games until March of 2006 (less than one year before the launch of the PS3…thats right I said PS3). Remember this is the system that brought us Final Fantasy VII VII, IX, Metal Gear Solid, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Resident Evil 1 and 2, Chrono Cross,Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee, Tenchu, Star Ocean, Suiikoden II, Wild Arms, Syphon Filter 1 and 2, Vagrant Story, Parasite Eve…should I go on? Ok Xenogears, Chrono Trigger, Spryo series, Grandia, Tomb Raider 2, Grand Turismo 2….and much more!

Happy Birthday PS1, oh how you’ve grown.

On May 11th of the following year North America got its taste of the Saturn launching with Astal, Daytona USA, The Mansion of Hidden Souls, Panzer Dragoon, Virtual Hydlide.
